Every day, millions of people throughout the world grasp a game controller or a mobile device to enjoy, learn and socialize on digital game platforms. Given the success of digital game sector, visionaries, consultants and policy makers now perceive digital games as a “spearhead sector” or “future laboratory”. An academic field concerned with digital games has grown strongly during the last two decades. Sprouting up from humanities, social sciences and design research, game studies has produced analytical instruments that are useful for exploring various manifestations of play within the contemporary society. At the same time, the larger industrial and economic frames that make digital games possible have until recently been scarcely studied, meaning that there are gaps in the research concerning the production and cultures surrounding the digital game industry. This workshop will focus on gameproduction and game industry research and particularly methods, data and preservation related to digital game production.
