Facial recognition technology (FRT) is increasingly used in authoritarian states, and states worldwide are becoming more authoritarian. Notably, the Hungarian government has recently banned all Pride parades, and is likely to use FRT to identify citizens exercising their right to demonstrate in order to later prosecute them. However, this is just one out of many global examples of FRT being used to unjustly attack civil rights. How do we navigate this new social reality, and how do we fight back? In this webinar conversation, moderated by Dr. Daniella Gáti and hosted by the AI Policy Lab at Umeå University, legal scholar Prof. Matilda Arvidsson and a computer vision expert will give their insights on the technological and legal structures around FRT, their limitations, and the opportunities that they yield, both to our oppression, and to our chances to fight back.
